Original Textile fine art by Kathryn Harmer. A famously talented Sth African Artist who specializes in fibre portraits - Humans, Animals and Flowers and more
This incredible piece of fibre art is wonderfully created with pieces of fabric and stitches. Kathryn is an incredibly talented fine art artist who uses fabric as many artists would use a paint pallet and her sewing machine becomes her pen and brush.
Kathryn’s work depicts a wonderful connection to her chosen subject, which she renders in an original drawing, that is then layered under her pallet of fibres. Nature, both human and feathered & feline & flowering her subjects and range of talent is incredible.
This piece forms part of her POSTCARD series and focuses on flora and fauna from Australia and Africa.
This piece features the -
Eastern Australian Rosella.
A colourful character that jauntily sits in the trees and shrieks and chats with his feathered neighbours. A delight to see in the flesh the Rosella is just as beautiful in Kathryn’s version.
The Postcard has been created on a natural cotton canvas which has been drawn on, then painted with a watercolour background layer. Finally fabrics have been layered and then the image has been sensitively stitched, bringing it to life. Kathryn loves the fabric to talk to the viewer and she loves the soft frayed edges that give life to the piece.
Signed in stitch this postcard features the common name, Latin name and Kathryn’s personal mark.
The canvas work is then mounted on a double layer of beautiful Shwe Shwe. A fabric unique to Africa.
It measures 10.5 x 12 inches and is ready for framing.
The bird image itself is about 8” in height.
This nature postcard is roughly the size of standard photocopier paper.
This is an original fine art art piece.
You won’t be sorry buying this piece. It is an absolute delight.
It would make a fabulously unique present for anyone!
It’s wonderfully tactile nature needs to be seen in the flesh to truly appreciate the talent within the piece. The photos don’t quite do it justice, but they colors are as true as possible to the original piece.
A sample of progress shots show her step by step creation for a similar art piece.
Kathryn also undertakes commissions on request. Please contact 2 Sew Textiles for enquiries.
While there is only one original and once sold it will be forever gone, but if you wanted to try rendering your own version, kits are available in this, and Kathryn’s other creations at www.2sewtextiles.com.au or here on this Etsy listing…
